The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office will no longer automatically prosecute charges that are related to traffic stops for violations like burned-out brake lights or expired registration tabs. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty says officers often use so-called “pretext stops” to get consent to search people’s cars, which she says studies have shown are ineffective and create mistrust with the community.
The man facing federal charges in connection with a Minneapolis carjacking and crash during a police pursuit that left two women dead and a child injured earlier this month made his first appearance in court Wednesday.
Minneapolis police continue to investigate the shooting on the Sabri encampment parking lot, and a shooting that wounded five people Monday morning near Lake Street and I-35W. City crews have now installed fencing to block off the walkway where the latter shooting occurred.
Animal health officials have confirmed bird flu in a turkey flock in southwestern Minnesota. The state Board of Animal Health says the Redwood County flock of about 20,000 turkeys experienced an unusually high number of deaths.
