Health insurance premiums are on the rise for many Minnesotans

Health insurance premiums for many Minnesotans are going to increase next year. The Minnesota Department of Commerce says the 2026 rates for individuals will go up 22 percent. These hikes are the highest in nearly 10 years and due in part to rising health care costs and a lapse in subsidies that made insurance premiums more affordable.

The rate increases will mostly affect those purchasing health insurances through MNsure. It also affects people buying directly from health insurance companies who don’t qualify for federal programs like Medicaid or Medicare.

The state department of health confirmed 10 new measles cases this week. It brings the total to 18 this year. The health department says all of the new cases were among unvaccinated people. The state says it is urging families to make sure they are up to date on their measles or MMR vaccines.

Another state legislator is jumping into the 2nd District Congressional race. The seat will be open in the next election because U.S. Rep. Angie Craig is running for a Senate seat. The new candidate is state Rep. Kaela Berg. She represents parts of Burnsville in the Minnesota House. Berg enters a race with other DFL candidates already in it.

The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis is getting a new restaurant in 2026. The James Beard Award-winning restaurant Owamni will relocate to the theater's empty restaurant space. Owamni is owned and run by chef Sean Sherman and focuses on highlighting Indigenous food.
