School board members across the state urge officials to comply with Title IX ruling from Trump administration

School board members from 40 districts across Minnesota are urging state officials to comply with a recent Title IX ruling from the Trump administration. Last week, the Trump administration determined that Minnesota is in violation of Title IX due to a policy that lets transgender student athletes compete in sports consistent with their gender identity. Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in programs that receive federal funding.

The feds say Minnesota must end its policy by Thursday or districts could lose federal education aid. School board members who signed on to the letter want to comply, saying the state has denied female athletes quote “equal athletic opportunities.”

Previously, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has argued that Minnesota’s transgender student athlete policy is consistent with the state’s human rights laws.

A 5-year long project that redesigned a major freeway interchange in Duluth is poised to open later this month. Locals referred to the interchange where I-35 met with I-535 from Wisconsin, and Highway 53 which runs north to the Iron Range, as the “Can of Worms.” The new, $435 million interchange is expected to open to traffic on Oct. 24.

Three people were injured Sunday when a small plane crashed in Aitkin County. Emergency responders located the crash site about a half mile from the McGregor Airport. The sheriff's office says initial information indicates that the plane lost power shortly after takeoff. The pilot was attempting to return to the airport when the plane went down in a swampy area short of the runway.

Three people in their early 20s were on board. Two are from Ham Lake and one from New Richmond. They were transported to hospitals for treatment. All three are reported to be in stable condition.

The Mall of America announced a familiar retailer will open a temporary store later this month. The Minnesota beanie retailer, Love Your Melon, will be located in the southeast court and remain open until March 2026. The mall says the new store marks the brand's relaunch under Zachary Quinn, one of the brand's original founders. According to the retailer's website, Love Your Melon will rebrand to LYM and continue its buy one, give one program.
