The first guilty pleas are expected soon in what prosecutors say was a massive scheme to defraud a Medicaid housing program.
A Republican candidate for Minnesota governor is out with a multipoint plan for combatting fraud among state social service vendors. State Rep. Kristin Robbins of Maple Grove is among several Republicans seeking the office. She's also the chair of the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Policy Committee. Robbins says she'd implement mandatory fraud prevention training for state staff, hire more forensic accountants and impose more-rigorous verification standards for nonprofits that receive state money.
A third tribal nation has entered into a cannabis agreement with the state. Gov. Tim Walz and tribal council president of the Prairie Island Indian Community Grant Johnson have signed the latest of the tribal-state cannabis compacts. It spells out terms and conditions to regulate tribal cannabis operations off tribal lands. Prairie Island Indian Community operates Island Pezi, an adult-use recreational cannabis company. The tribal nation has indicated interest in expanding both its retail operations and cultivation wholesaling into the state market.
The state of Minnesota is giving a $10 million grant to the first manufacturing plant in the world to produce high-powered magnets from iron and nitrogen.
