The city of Minneapolis will certify the results of the 2025 elections Monday. Voters gave Mayor Jacob Frey a third term — which he says will be his last. There will be four new council members on the dais when the new term begins next January. Three of those new people replaced council members who chose not to run for another term.
Monday marks 50 years since the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a vicious Lake Superior storm, with the loss of its entire crew. Monday afternoon hundreds of people will gather at Split Rock Lighthouse on Minnesota’s North Shore for the annual ceremony to remember the 29 lives lost.
Cities along the Northstar commuter rail line are concerned about the financial impact of its looming shutdown. In August, the Metropolitan Council voted to stop the commuter rail service in early January due to low ridership. That left just a few months to sort out complicated questions about land, leases and structures around the rail stations. BNSF Railway says unused structures within active rail lines must be removed for safety reasons.
Over the weekend, the union representing educators in Minneapolis Public Schools reached a tentative contract agreement with the district. The deal announced late Saturday night averts a teachers’ strike that had been set to begin Tuesday. The union said the deal includes smaller, enforceable limits on class sizes in Minneapolis schools and better pay for educators.
