Winter driving remains one of the leading causes of cold-season emergencies. Taking a few precautions now can help prevent accidents once snow and ice begin to build on the roads.
Winter driving preparations
Our last day of Winter Hazard Awareness Week focuses on winter driving.
Of all injuries related to ice and snow, about 70 percent occur in automobiles. Making sure your vehicle is prepped and ready for any winter storm can be the difference between arriving safely and facing a dangerous emergency on the road.
Winter storms can quickly reduce visibility, create slick road conditions and bring sudden bursts of snow that make travel dangerous. Checking the forecast before heading out can help you prepare and allow extra travel time when snow or other wintry precipitation is expected.
Checking road conditions by calling 511 or visiting the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s website can also help you plan the safest travel route.

Having emergency supplies inside your vehicle will help you stay safe if you get stuck, break down or face unexpected delays during winter weather.

Avoiding travel until conditions improve is ideal. However, if you must be on the road, stay informed, have your winter survival kit ready and pay close attention to changing weather conditions, which can shift at a moment’s notice.
