Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is celebrated Friday — a holiday rooted in themes of renewal and new beginnings. Originating in Iran, Nowruz is observed by cultures across the globe.
This year, however, the holiday arrives amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Tensions remain high following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran three weeks ago, casting a somber tone over what is typically a joyful occasion.
In the Twin Cities, the Iranian Culture Collective has canceled its planned Nowruz events in solidarity with those affected by the violence.
