Food shelves are now able to accept donated eggs past their 'sell-by' date

The big annual ag trade show Farmfest continues Thursday. At the event, farmers are learning about new tech and how to navigate a challenging economy. Across the highway outside of Farmfest, farmers got to see a demo of a self-driving tractor tilling a field.

As hundreds of firefighters continue to make progress containing the Boundary Waters wildfires, Gov. Tim Walz says that response over the past month has highlighted vital relationships that kick in during disasters. Walz and other state officials said while recent fire activity has been minimal, caution is still needed. The region remains in drought — and we are just now approaching what’s traditionally been the fall wildfire season across the north.

Food shelves are now able to accept donated eggs past their "sell-by" date from retailers, thanks to a new law that went into effect on Aug. 1. Hunger relief advocates say this law helps divert eggs that are still safe to eat to people in need, instead of into landfills. Eggs are one of the most in-demand items at food shelves. Second Harvest Heartland distributed about 200,000 dozen eggs last year.

State health officials suspect jalapeños from Chipotle and other Mexican restaurants may be the cause of a salmonella outbreak. Health officials have identified 100 cases so far. A Minnesota Health Department epidemiologist says the outbreak isn't an ongoing risk to the public.

Drivers along Highway 52 between Rochester and the Twin Cities will lose a familiar landmark Thursday. The pale blue water tower in Zumbrota has been standing watch over the northwest side of the city for decades, but it’s no longer needed to supply water to the city. Recent improvements shifted water storage to a newer ground reservoir on Zumbrota's east side, so the city is having the tower demolished. It’s asking people to stay clear of the area while that work is under way.
