A familiar landmark for drivers traveling between the Twin Cities and Rochester is set to be removed this week.
The city of Zumbrota said its old water tower near U.S. Highway 52 will be taken down on Thursday.
“The tower has already been decommissioned for approximately two months and is obsolete following the completion of our water main looping project,” the city reported. “The new water system improvements have eliminated the need for the tower, making it time for its removal.”
The old tower is located just east of the highway, on the northwest side of Zumbrota. The function of the tower has now been replaced by the city’s newer ground storage reservoir tank, located on the east side of Zumbrota.

The city council in June approved a bid of just over $54,000 to remove the old tower.
“For everyone’s safety, please stay well clear of the work area while demolition is underway,” city officials said. “There will be heavy equipment and crews working throughout the day (on Thursday), and we ask that residents avoid the area until the project is complete.”
The Zumbrota tower will be the second one razed along the Highway 52 corridor this year.
Earlier this year, the old water tower in Hampton, just south of the Twin Cities, was removed after being replaced by a new tower on the other side of the highway.
