Hatch has campaign debt

There were several stories over the weekend detailing why Mike Hatch was left out to sea while other Democrats rode the wave to victory. The AP and the Pi Press have stories. What wasn't mentioned is that Hatch went into debt in the final week of the campaign. He and Lori Swanson sent out e-mail requests to supporters asking to contribute to the Hatch campaign to retire the debt. Here's a portion of the e-mail:

Unfortunately, in the last seven days of the campaign, Mike was targeted with about $1 million in harsh and untrue attack ads on television, radio and in mailings by an Alexandria, Virginia shadow PAC founded by the originator of Swift Boat Veteran’s For Truth and run by alumni of the Bush White House. We had no choice but to try to respond to the attacks. This meant that in the last few days of the campaign, we had to divert additional money toward our television buy, and make an unplanned radio buy. As a result, we now are left with a modest campaign debt.
