In addition to following the story of Hurricane Ike through various news media and the NOAA National Hurricane Center web site, MPR listeners may want to view the actual data being reported from the Gulf as Ike passes over. One way to do this is to access the NOAA National Buoy Data Center. Already today observations from Buoy 42001 located in the mid-Gulf near the outer fringe of Hurricane Ike indicate wind gusts near 60 mph and wave heights approaching 30 feet. Surface water temperatures of 84 degrees F and higher support the notion that Hurricane Ike will strengthen today. As it approaches the Texas coastline more and more instrumented buoys will be in its path. Presumably they will continue to transmit their data and it will be interested to watch the fluctuations in strength.
