Cause of apartment fire still under investigation

Share story

Nearly 200 people will have to find a new place to live following a fire last night that destroyed a 64-unit apartment building in Burnsville.

There are no reports of injuries at Burncliff Apartments, and authorities say they have accounted for all the building's residents.

The residents were loaded onto buses and taken to nearby Burnsville High School.

Courtney Johnson, with the Twin Cities Red Cross, said the relief agency put up 29 people at the high school overnight.

"A lot of people are from what is being referred to as 'Building A'. Building A was completely destroyed. There's also 'Building B,' which had a little bit of smoke damage from being so close in the vicinity of where the fire was. But, essentially folks will be able to get back to their homes, we're hearing as early as today," Johnson said.

Authorities also evacuated a nearby apartment building, as they fought the blaze in subzero temperatures.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
