Police: Willmar man left 5-year-old in charge of toddlers

(AP) - A Willmar man has been arrested after police say he left a 5-year-old girl in charge of two toddlers.

The 25-year-old was arraigned Friday on a misdemeanor charge of child neglect.

Police say a woman was walking down the hallway of an apartment building when a crying girl opened a door. The police report says the child reportedly told the woman she "didn't know how to feed the babies."

The woman stayed with the children for about 30 minutes. When no adult returned she called authorities at 10:30 p.m.

Minnesota Department of Human Services guidelines say children under the age of 8 shouldn't be left alone. They also say a baby sitter should always be at least 11 years old.
