District explains actions in teacher harassment case

The state's largest school district is trying to explain its actions in a teacher harassment case in a "letter to the community" on its Web site.

The letter, from Anoka-Hennepin board members, says the district won't "make excuses" for two teachers who allegedly harassed a student over his perceived sexual orientation.

However, the district says under contract law, it wasn't allowed to fire the two teachers. Instead, it says, teachers who've committed such offenses must first be given training and the opportunity to improve their performance.

The district paid a $25,000 settlement to the former student.
