Paulsen has cash advantage in Minn.'s 3rd District

Republican U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen started the year with a big financial lead on the two Democrats vying for his job in Minnesota's 3rd District.

Paulsen's fundraising report to federal regulators showed nearly $944,000 in the bank as the year began. Paulsen is serving his first term representing the western suburbs of Minneapolis.

Democrats Maureen Hackett and Jim Meffert combined had less than a fifth that amount.

Hackett, a psychiatrist, reported $129,000 in the bank, largely thanks to her own money. She lent her campaign $75,000 and made a $28,000 donation.

Meffert, who heads the statewide parent-teachers association, started the year with nearly $33,000 after giving his campaign $1,000.
