Minn. Senate OKs moving up primary election

The Minnesota Senate gave a preliminary stamp of approval Monday to move the state's primary election up one month.

The legislation would move the primary up to Aug. 10 from Sept. 14 to bring the state in compliance with federal law.

Lawmakers hope to give military and overseas voters enough time to get their absentee ballots in.

The Senate moved the bill toward final passage with a voice vote.

Sen. Terri Bonoff, DFL-Minnetonka, says the legislation needs to be passed quickly so local and state election officials can prepare.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty has shown support for the bill in order to meet federal requirements.
