DNR to anglers: Get ready to pack it in

Officials are reminding Minnesota anglers to remove their fish houses and shelters this weekend.

Shelters must be off lakes in the southern two-thirds of the state by midnight on Monday, March 1.

Aaron Kahre is a conservation officer with the Minnesota DNR and says even though the ice is still good on most lakes, the sun is powerful enough to melt it around a shack.

"The sun gets a little higher in the air, has a little more power, and even though it might only be 10 degrees outside, the reflection of the sun out on the side of an ice house can melt the ice around the house," he said.

Kahre says officers are also urging anglers to remove debris from the lakes. Not doing so could result in a fine of up to $230.

The deadline to remove shacks in northern Minnesota is March 15.
