Minnesota will have to try again if it hopes to score more than $300 million in federal education money.

The state learned yesterday that it is not a finalist in the so-called "Race to the Top" competition.

A handful of states will win as much as $2 billion next month in the competition. But there will be another chance for Minnesota and other states to apply for a second round of funding later this year.

Education reporter Tom Weber spoke with Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer about the decision.
