Minn. vigil to back nurses on eve of strike

Supporters of Twin Cities nurses are holding a vigil on the eve of a one-day strike.

The vigil happens Wednesday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in St. Paul.

Speakers include union and religious leaders and two Democratic state lawmakers, Sen. John Marty of Roseville and Rep. Erin Murphy of St. Paul. The SEIU Healthcare Minnesota union is organizing the event.

Nurses at 14 Twin Cities hospitals are preparing to strike Thursday after talks between their union, the Minnesota Nurses Association, and the hospitals deadlocked over staffing levels and pensions. Hospitals have been training replacement workers and in some cases, rescheduling elective surgeries.

The strike doesn't affect Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Regions Hospital in St. Paul or Woodwinds in Woodbury.
