A St. Paul man pleaded guilty Thursday for his role in the ambush shooting death of a Maplewood Sgt. Joseph Bergeron this spring.

Joshua Martin, 21, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting intentional second-degree murder for his role in the May 1 killing.

He faces a prison term of 35 ½ years when he is sentenced Aug. 20.

Martin also pleaded guilty to kidnapping in a carjacking attempt earlier in the day.

Martin testified in Ramsey County District Court that he and his friend, 21-year-old Jason Jones, came across Bergeron in his squad car after the attempted carjacking. Martin says Jones shot and killed the officer. Jones was shot and killed by police in the ensuing manhunt.
