St. Paul man charged with aiding cop shooter

Prosecutors have charged a 22-year-old St. Paul man with helping a suspect in the shooting death of a Maplewood police officer.

James Lentz was charged with a felony for aiding Josh Martin, one of two men involved in the May 1 shooting death of Sgt. Joe Bergeron.

Lentz initially told police he didn't know the suspect. He later admitted he'd driven Martin through St. Paul after the shooting, and that Martin had told him he'd been involved in Bergeron's shooting. He also took Martin to a tattoo shop during the manhunt for Bergeron's killer.

Police shot and killed the alleged shooter during the search. Martin pleaded guilty to murder charges, and was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison last month.
