Xcel working to connect power after heat spurs outages

Xcel Energy officials say hot weather in the Twin Cities brought a big electrical demand Tuesday and was partly responsible for thousands of power outages.

Company spokesman Tom Hoen said at one point, 6,500 customers were without power in the west metro. As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, that number had dropped to 600, Hoen said.

Crews are still out working on scattered outages around the metro area, he said.

"It looks like the weather is going to be dramatically improved from yesterday and the day before and we expect the rest of those customers should be on later this morning," Hoen said.

About half of those outages are in Golden Valley, according to Xcel. About 70 customers in St. Louis Park are also reported to be without power this morning.
