Murder trial begins today for man accused of shooting deputy
A murder trial is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Crookston for the man accused of shooting a Mahomen County deputy in 2009.
After two weeks of jury selection, testimony begins this week in the trial of Thomas Fairbanks, 34, who is accused of first degree murder for the shooting Deputy Christopher Dewey.
Dewey was shot in the head and abdomen in February of 2009 and died 18 months later as a result of his injuries.
An accomplice, Daniel Vernier, pled guilty for failing to aid Dewey after the shooting. Vernier is expected to testify against Fairbanks.
If convicted, Fairbanks faces life in prison. The trial is expected to last about three weeks.
