WASHINGTON - In a New York Times op-ed, DFL Rep. Keith Ellison argues that the United States should change its long-standing policy and support Palestinian statehood.
The U.S. has been trying to head off a Palestinian effort to ask for statehood at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York although that effort is flagging.
In his piece, Ellison argues that the Palestinian Authority is following a peaceful course charted by other would-be nations, including Bosnia and South Sudan, by approaching the UN for recognition.
The Palestinians' use of multilateral diplomacy to achieve statehood represents a step toward achieving the two-state solution and achieving a more stable Middle East. It is an opportunity, not a threat. We should seize it now.
