A survey by the consumer banking website Bankrate.com found ATM and bounced check fees tend to be less severe in the Twin Cities than in similar big-city markets nationwide.
"When it comes to fees like overdrafts and ATM fees, the Twin Cities actually fare quite well, compared to other top markets around the country," said Bankrate.com's Greg McBride. His organization examined checking accounts and ATM fees imposed by the 10 largest banks in 25 major U.S. markets.
The Twin Cities had the second-lowest average ATM surcharge fee, at $2.15. The national average was $2.40.
The Twin Cities tied with Los Angeles for lowest average bounced check fee, at just $28.89. The national average was $30.83
There's great variation the fees different banks charge, McBride said. Smaller banks tend to charge lower fees. Small banks number more in Minnesota than in most states.
