Two officers injured in holiday crashes

A pair of Minnesota police officers are recovering after squad accidents over the New Year's holiday.

The most recent incident happened early Monday morning. Savage police Officer Frank Mackall was on his way to assist fellow officers on a suspicious-person call when he lost control of his car and hit a tree beside Glendale Road. Mackall was alone in the car. He's listed in critical condition at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbsindale.

Also on New Year's Day, a state trooper was injured in a crash near Redwood Falls. Matt Smith was responding to an accident call and had his lights and siren on. An oncoming car, driven by a teenager from Seaforth, didn't yield at a stop sign, causing the squad to hit another car carrying a pair of adults and two children.

The trooper and a woman riding in the car struck by the squad were hurt. She was treated and released, and the trooper is expected to recover.
