Flight makes emergency landing; students OK

A Delta Air Lines flight carrying students from Southwest High School in Minneapolis made an emergency landing last night at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Delta spokesman Eric Torbensen says the plane took off from LaGuardia Airport Sunday evening and made an emergency landing when crew members detected an electrical smell.

Torbensen says the emergency landing was "purely precautionary." The flight landed without incident or injury. The 145 passengers were booked on a later flight to the Twin Cities.

Martin Keller's teenage daughter was on the Delta flight along with 35 other students and four chaperones from Southwest High School in Minneapolis.

Keller says the group missed a choir performance at the United Nations on Thursday due to technical problems that delayed their flight. He said the additional flight issues on Sunday left his daughter rattled.

"She was audibly upset," Keller said. "You could hear it in her voice. She's a pretty smart and strong kid, but I think she was on the verge of breaking down a couple of times."

Keller said his daughter arrived home early Monday.
