Republican 8th District Congressman Chip Cravaack is releasing a new campaign ad today accusing his challenger, former DFL Congressman Rick Nolan, of "pushing for harmful, job-killing regulations that would stop mining projects like Polymet."
Polymet is seeking regulatory approval to begin precious metal mining on the Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota. Many environmentalists oppose the mining, saying it could contaminate lakes, rivers and groundwater.
Cravaack introduced legislation, which the House passed, to streamline permitting for mining projects. Nolan opposes Cravaack's amendment. Nolan says he supports streamlining mining permitting, but he says Cravaack's legislation goes beyond that and needlessly rolls back regulations.
The expansion of mining is a major issue in the 8th District Congressional race with Cravaack and Nolan each claiming to be a stronger advocate for mining jobs than the other.
