A man who allegedly fired on Minneapolis police officers late Wednesday night has been hospitalized after officers returned fire and hit him.
Police say officers were sent to the area of 37th Street E. and Elliot Avenue S. at about 11 p.m. when electronic gunfire detectors alerted authorities to shots in the area.
Arriving police saw a suspicious vehicle, which they ordered to stop at 38th Street E. and Columbus Avenue S., and one of the people inside got out and ran away.
Officers pursued the passenger on foot, and said the adult male fired a handgun at them as he fled. No officers were hit, but police fired back and hit the suspect. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

A handgun was found at the scene and the four officers have been placed on routine administrative leave.
