Little Falls defendant to appear in court

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The man charged with the murder of two teens in Little Falls last month will appear in court on Monday afternoon.

Byron Smith will ask a judge to reduce his bail by 10 percent, according to officials with Morrison County Court.

Smith's bail is currently set at $2 million bond, or $200,000 cash, without conditions; or $1 million bond, or $100,000 with conditions.

Conditions could include surrendering a passport or turning over firearms.

Smith was charged with two counts of second-degree murder. He told the police that he shot Nicholas Brady, 17, and Haile Kifer, 18, multiple times after they broke into his house on Thanksgiving Day.

Smith is a retired State Department security engineer.
