More youth food shelves open in east metro

The Salvation Army is expanding its food shelf options to target homeless youth in the east metro.
The charity will be offering special hours and services at its locations on West 7th Street and Payne Avenue in St. Paul, as well as in Maplewood. The food shelves will focus on easy to prepare foods and will feature volunteers from the youth group StreetWorks.
Salvation Army spokeswoman Annette Bauer said there are already similar programs elsewhere. She said StreetWorks will offer housing and other referrals right at the food shelves.
"We were sending kids from St. Paul into Minneapolis," Bauer said. "We don't want to do that anymore."
The food shelves are scheduled to offer assistance Monday through Thursday, starting next week.
The Salvation Army has also been running an 11-bed youth shelter in St. Paul since last June.
