Police: Girl found dead had signs of cold exposure

Bemidji police are trying to determine why a 6-year-old girl was out in bitterly cold conditions early Thursday.

Police say the girl was found inside the entrance of a Bemidji apartment building showing signs of exposure. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The child's mother and a neighbor called 911 around 6:30 this morning.

Investigators are developing a timeline to determine when the child was last seen, and how long she was exposed to the cold temperatures.

Early morning temperatures in Bemidji were 27 degrees below zero with a wind chill of minus 40.

The Ramsey County medical examiners office is conducting an autopsy.

Officials won't release the child's name until relatives are notified.
