Failure in baseball led Pride to music

Today's music is "Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger" by Charley Pride in honor of his 76th birthday today.

In all, Pride recorded 39 songs that made it to the top of the country charts. But country music was not his first career choice. His dream was to be a professional baseball player. He pitched in the New York Yankees farm system and before that for several Negro League teams.

Pride wrote in his autobiography that in 1953 he was traded with another player to the Birmingham Black Barons for a team bus. Eventually he hurt his arm and had to give up baseball. That's when Pride turned all of his attention to music, and it turned out pretty well for him.
