Construction underway on St. Paul Saints ballpark

Share story

The city of St. Paul will be formally starting construction on its new Lowertown Ballpark Wednesday.

The work follows the demolition of a former shampoo factory. The 7,000 seat stadium will replace Midway Stadium just west of Snelling on the north edge of St. Paul. The $63 million downtown project will be the second stadium under construction this season, with work ongoing in Minneapolis on the new Vikings stadium.

Crews in St. Paul will be pouring the first concrete footings for the baseball park today. Work on the city-owned stadium is scheduled to go on for more than another year, but should be ready for the opening day of the St. Paul Saints 2015 season. The stadium is also expected to host amateur teams and more than 100 other non-baseball events annually.

The project is being funded by a $25 million state grant, and the city of St. Paul. The Saints are providing $11 million in funding, with other funding from the Metropolitan Council.
