Beware cop imposter's phone scam

The Ramsey County Sheriff's office is warning people to be on guard for an impostor posing as a deputy.

The Sheriff's Office says someone is calling people posing as a deputy sheriff and telling them they have not done mandatory jury duty service and may have a warrant issued for their arrest. The caller then demands a payment, typically in the form of a pre-paid card. Sheriff's spokesman Randy Gustafson said in a statement that the amount is typically several hundred dollars.

The Sheriff's office says the caller sometimes identifies himself as Lieutenant John Roberts, but other names are sometimes used.

Authorities are asking anyone who gets such a call or gets a similar demand to try and note any information regarding the call, particularly any phone numbers or addresses the individual provides, and to call the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.
