The Mississippi River has started to ease back from its flood crest, and water is receding elsewhere as well today.


The gauge on the Mississippi in downtown St. Paul showed the flood crest just after 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The St. Croix river at Stillwater is still rising, but the North Central River Forecast Center in Chanhassen expects the water to only rise another couple of inches late today or early tomorrow morning.


The gauge on the Mississippi at Red Wing shows the river heading for a crest this weekend, with the river within a few inches of its expected peak below the dam at Hastings and in Red Wing.


The Crow River in Delano is expected to fall below major flood stage as soon as today, and be below flood stage by Monday.


More rain is expected this weekend, including an inch and a half of expected rain the south and eastern parts of Minnesota by Monday. The National Weather Service says widespread severe storms are possible on Sunday.
