25 years ago, Milli Vanilli hit No. 1 then soon crashed

Twenty-five years ago today, July 1, 1989, the act Milli Vanilli hit No. 1 in the U.S. for the first time with this song "Baby Don't Forget My Number."

Milli Vanilli went on to have two other No. 1 hits, and won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. But it all came crashing down, when it became widely known that the lead singers lip-synced the songs.

One of the the first public signs of the lip-syncing came at a concert in front of a live audience later in July '89, when their recording started to skip.

According to video channel VH-1's "Behind the Music," the two front-men kept up their act for a few moments, then ran off the stage. No one seemed to notice or care, and the concert went on with other songs as if nothing had happened. Reporters and fans eventually caught on, and so did the folks at the Grammys. They eventually withdrew the award.
