Memorial fund for cyclist triples fundraising goal

A memorial fund for the family of a woman killed while bicycling in southwestern Minnesota has raised more than $15,000 in three days, more than triple the original goal.

Andrea Boeve, 33, of Steen, was riding on a Rock County road with her 4 and 1-year old daughters in tow when she was struck by a pickup truck. The girls survived the crash.

Christopher Weber, the driver of the pickup, has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide. Authorities believe Weber was distracted by his cellphone.

The Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota is reminding motorists to pay attention to the road.

"It's really a troubling thing for our staff and board and members, and we definitely want to move toward a place where it's safe enough out there where we have no fatalities," said Nick Mason, program manager for the Bicycle Alliance.

Mason says bicycling remains statistically safer than riding in a car and the alliance encourages people to keep riding.
