Mayo Clinic is the best hospital in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report in its annual ranking.
Steve Parente, who specializes in health economics at the University of Minnesota, says the ranking is a victory for Mayo, especially as the clinic competes with other major U.S. healthcare centers for national and international patients.
"A ranking of number one reinforces the notion that Rochester, Minnesota could be the destination for the best in American medical care," said University of Minnesota health economics specialist Steve Parente.
Mayo earned more number one rankings than any other provider, ranking one or two in 11 of the 12 specialties.
The ranking comes as Mayo embarks on a 6 billion dollar expansion plan over the next 20 years. That includes more than half a billion dollars in taxpayer money from state and local jurisdictions.
