Today's Morning Edition music is from 50 years ago today when Rod Stewart performed on television for the first time.  

He appeared on the BBC program "The Beat Room" as a member of the blues group Long John Baldry and the Hoochie Coochie Men.   

The song "Up Above My Head" was released as the B-side of a single. It was the first time Rod Stewart was heard on a record.  

During his brief tenure with the Hoochie Coochie Men, Stewart earned the nickname "Rod the Mod" for the way he dressed.
