A North Mankato man is in the hospital after leading police on a chase over the weekend, and shooting himself after a standoff.
North Mankato Police Department Patrol Officer Brad Schultz says they were called to a violation of a protection order late Saturday. While responding to the call, officers spotted the suspect's car.
They tried to pull him over and the man fled, eventually getting on northbound Highway 169, where he was eventually stopped.
Schultz said the suspect displayed a handgun during the chase and again when the vehicle was stopped.
"Negotiations occurred for some time and the suspect shot himself with a small caliber handgun," he said.
The man was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester just after 1 a.m. Sunday.
Schultz says the incident closed off a section of Highway 169 for a short time during the standoff.
