Postal Service deliveries hit a record
The U.S. Postal Service says it expects to deliver as many as 470 million packages this holiday season. That's an all-time record and a 12 percent increase over last year.
Twin Cities Postal Service spokesman Pete Nowacki said the agency hit the 400 million mark this week. He said an improving economy explains part of the surge, but the main driver is e-commerce.
"As more and more people are shopping online and having stuff delivered to their homes or where they work, it just means there's more packages in the system," he said.
Nowacki said that again this year, carriers in many areas — including the Twin Cities — delivered packages on several Sundays ahead of Christmas.
UPS and FedEx are also projecting record deliveries this year.
