Police say a 5-year-old boy died in a hit-and-run accident in the driveway of his St. Joseph, Minn., home Monday.

Cody James Nuckolls was struck by a Chevy Trailblazer while his mother waited for another child to get off of a school bus across the street, the St. Joseph Police Department said Tuesday.

"When the bus came to a stop, it blocked the mother's view," according to a police statement, "at one point, the mother heard Cody yell out, so she crossed back over the roadway and saw her son fall to the pavement but did not see any moving vehicles.

"When she found him, she believed he may have fallen and was experiencing an unknown medical issue."

The parents took Cody to a medical clinic. He was transported from there to a St. Cloud emergency room where he was pronounced dead.

Police have identified the driver of the suspected vehicle. They are not releasing any more information at this time.
