Duluth police say they're going to shift their policing philosophy next year as they see the need for community policing grow.
The 150-officer force has separate units for each purpose now, according to Chief Gordon Ramsay. Recent events, including protests in Maryland and Missouri, have underscored the need for improving police community relations, he added.
"The bottom line is that officers need to recognize the importance of building relationships and long-term problem solving, and that's the direction, as this evolves, that we want to go," he said.
Ramsay hopes the change will mean Duluth officers won't have any doubt about who will be responsible for taking time to improve interactions with the public in informal and non-emergency situations. The shift will be effective in 2016.
