St. Paul man charged with slashing teen

A St. Paul man has been charged with a second-degree assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly slashing a 14-year-old boy with a knife on Wednesday.

The boy was walking to his home in the 400 block of Carroll Avenue around 4:25 p.m. when Darell Deandray Johnson, 30, emerged from a bush near the boy's home, according to a criminal complaint.

Johnson gave the boy a tight embrace and started slashing him with a knife.

The boy, who's identified in the complaint as CF, fell to ground and kicked Johnson. However, Johnson continued to attack the boy and slashed CF's body and face with a knife several times, the complaint said.

The boy suffered three injuries to his face and officers found several other minor cuts to his arms and legs. CF's shirt was also cut from his chest to his abdomen.

The boy, who told police he had never seen Johnson before the attack, freed himself from Johnson and ran away.

CF identified Johnson to police.

When officers interviewed Johnson at his home, he gave different accounts on his whereabouts on the day of the attack, and denied carrying weapons, according to the complaint.

Johnson is in detention on $50,000 bail. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
