State Sen. Jim Metzen, DFL-South St. Paul, is undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic for a recurrence of lung cancer.

A spokesperson for the DFL Senate Caucus confirmed Metzen’s illness after state Rep. Rick Hansen, DFL-South St. Paul, announced in an email update to his constituents that Metzen is facing a “serious health issue.”

Metzen served in the Minnesota House from 1974 to 1986, when he was elected to the Minnesota Senate. He served as Senate president  from 2003 to 2010.
