Pedestrian is in critical condition after being hit by taxi

A 21-year old man is in critical condition after a taxicab struck him early Sunday morning in downtown Minneapolis. The victim was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center by ambulance.

Police department spokesman John Elder says the man was among three people who ran across Hennepin Avenue near Eighth Street just after 3 a.m. Elder says the two others made it across.

"They did cross mid-block without the use of lights and a crosswalk. We're taking a lot of different factors into account when determining what happened in this crash," he said.

Elder says the taxi driver has been cooperating with investigators, and there's no indication that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
