Officer shot in standoff was in his third week on the job

Authorities say an officer shot in a Hutchinson standoff was in field training at the time of the incident, in his third week on the job.

The Hutchinson Police Department and the McLeod County Sheriff's Office identified the officer involved in the Nov. 1 incident as 23-year-old Jacob Willers. He was hired on Oct. 12.

Willers was shot in the leg and is recovering. Police say he responded to a verbal disturbance at a residence when a struggle ensued between the suspect and officers. Police have identified the suspect as Luverne Roy Christenson, 49, who was shot and killed when Sheriff's Deputy Matt Wyatt returned fire.

Wyatt is a two-year veteran with the McLeod Sheriff's Office. Police say he was recently selected to become a field training officer.
