Art Hounds: Surrealist prints and abstract paintings

This week on Art Hounds we find out more about surrealist prints in Minneapolis, abstract paintings in Hutchinson and classical Indian dance in St. Paul.

St. Olaf Art Professor Michon Weeks enjoyed seeing Andrew Nordin's abstract paintings at the Hutchinson Center for the Arts. The exhibition, titled "Ouroboros Cycle," features brightly colored paintings inspired by, among other things, a patterned shirt worn by the character Willona Woods on the '70s TV show "Good Times." The exhibition closes November 12, but Nordin has another show coming to Gallery 71 in Edina in February.

Blaine resident Priya Sundararajan has two daughters who are studying Bharatanatyam dance, so the whole family is excited for Leela Samson and Spanda Dance Company's performance of "Past Forward" this Saturday. Samson is world renowned for her sophisticated choreography. The concert focuses on the inward journey of the soul, and how that's experienced as both an individual and within a collective group. This is Spanda's 20th anniversary tour; the performance takes place at the St. Paul Student Center Theater at the University of Minnesota.

Mia Prints and Drawings Curator Tom Rassieur was bemused, intrigued and puzzled by the work of Jay Heikes currently up at the Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis. Heikes explored the idea of the exquisite corpse — a surrealist parlor game — through cyanotype, lithography, and screenprinting. Rassieur says Heikes is playing games with the viewer, and it's fun to play along. The show runs through Nov. 21.
