Art Hounds: Mary Mack and environmental art

This week Art Hounds take us to an open mic night in Duluth, an exhibition that blends art and science and the Children' Theatre Company's production of "The Jungle Book."

Writer Julie Gard plans to be at Beaner's Central Coffeehouse in Duluth tonight for open mic night with featured guest Mary Mack. Mack is known for her Minnesota-centric humor, her love of meat raffles, and for leading sing-alongs on her mandolin. The evening also includes plenty of local writers performing new work, and a pretty intense pub quiz about insects.

Vocalist and performer Paul Coate is looking forward to taking his kids to see "The Jungle Book" at Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis. This retelling of the Rudyard Kipling classic involves a talented ensemble cast. Coate is a particular fan of the work of H. Adam Harris, who plays Baloo the Bear. Harris is known for not just being a great actor, but for teaching the next generation of actors. The Jungle Book runs through December 20.

Visual artist Heather Cole was impressed by the art she saw in "Sustainable Acts: Mother Earth's Embrace" at the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment. The exhibition brings together the work of 40 artists on themes of environmental and social justice. Cole was particularly taken with Sarah Filipi's photography; over the course of a year, Filipi took a picture each day of an object she found lying on the ground. Cole says she now looks at the objects she herself finds differently. The show runs through January 15.
